Users Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets
A recent study indicates that patients who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"People using such drugs must be aware of the danger of quick weight regain when the medication concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a reversion to original weight within about 18 months.
Analyzing Therapies
The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.
Researchers note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Fast Rebound
Doctors propose the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the amplified regain.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Chronic Disease?
Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.
This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Experiences
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs report a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you become starving," recalled a patient.
This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Significant Adoption
Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success relies on ongoing lifestyle support.
