European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States
The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were central to campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This row threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
