At least 13 passengers perish and 98 hurt in train crash in Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.

The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.

The official confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president noted plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the prior year. This rail line was intimately linked to his administration's strategic vision for the southeastern region.

Another massive rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions

The building of both train projects was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its role in civilian projects. They were completed at an rapid speed, defying predictions to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled significant apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an previous accident this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a key rival party demanded an immediate halt in the building and running of all such projects.

This stoppage was requested until the completion of a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for swift accountability."

In response, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the construction and management of these strategic projects.
